The Ground Beneath Us: Why Soil Matters in the Catawba River Valley

When we talk about land conservation, we often picture forests, rivers, or wildlife, which is accurate. But the foundation of all these treasures lies beneath our feet: soil. December 5th is World Soil Day, a reminder that healthy soil sustains our farms, filters our water, and anchors the ecosystems that make the Catawba River Valley thrive.

Soil is more than dirt. It is a living system, teeming with organisms that recycle nutrients, store carbon, and support the crops that feed our families. Our agricultural heritage depends on fertile soil, from the fields of crops that shaped our past to the diverse farms that provide fresh produce today. As families gather for holiday meals, it is worth remembering that every bite begins with healthy soil.

Yet soil faces growing threats. Erosion from unchecked development, pollution from runoff, and the loss of farmland all weaken the ground beneath us. Once degraded, soil is difficult—sometimes impossible—to restore. That is why Katawba Valley Land Trust works tirelessly to protect farmland, forests, and wetlands across Lancaster, Chester, and Kershaw Counties, and surrounding areas. By conserving land, we safeguard the soil that sustains our crops, prevents flooding during winter rains, and supports wildlife habitats.

Healthy soil also connects directly to clean water. Forests and wetlands act as natural filters, ensuring that the Catawba River and its tributaries remain safe for drinking, recreation, and wildlife. In a season when heavy rains can raise flood risks, protected lands provide resilience by absorbing water and reducing runoff.

World Soil Day is not just a global observance—it is a local call to action. Soil is the silent partner in every conservation success story. Protecting it today ensures that our region’s farms, forests, and families will thrive tomorrow.

As the year draws to a close, we invite our neighbors to reflect on the ground beneath us. Supporting land conservation is not just about preserving scenic views—it is about protecting the very resources that make life possible. Healthy soil means a healthier Catawba River Valley, today and for generations to come.
