Conservation Through Partnerships

The Katawba Valley Land Trust has worked with numerous private, local, state and federal partners to accomplish conservation objectives over the years.

• Expansion of protected areas around Landsford Canal State Park in Chester and Lancaster counties from 200 to over 1,400 acres through partnerships with private landowners, and state and federal agencies. Now, over 2000 linear feet along the Catawba River area ae protected.
• Creation of the Lindsay Pettus Greenway (in honor of KVLT’s founder), a corridor of lush vegetation currently exists along the trails and major creeks within the City of Lancaster. This development provides urban open space of over 350 acres through purchases and donations of land by numerous private property owners.
• Purchase of the Heritage Tract, an area of stunning natural beauty surrounding the reservoirs at Great Falls in Chester County, protects over 2,000 acres and supports new economic opportunities for this distressed community. Collaborative efforts with numerous entities, such as Duke Power, have provided public access to the Whitewater areas on the Catawba River from Fishing Creek at the Nitrolee Access area.
• Protection of working family farms and properties through funding from the South Carolina Conservation Bank.
• Protection of Revolutionary War Battlefields including the Battle of Waxhaw (also known as Buford’s Massacre),the Battle of Camden and the Battle of Hanging Rock working with South Carolina Battleground Preservation Trust and American Battlefield Trust
• In partnership with The Nature Conservancy and state agencies, KVLT has worked to protect over 2,500 acres at the Forty-Acre Rock Heritage Site in eastern Lancaster County. The site is home to unusual granite outcrops and many rare and endangered plant species.
