Endangered Species Day: Honoring the Life That Depends on Us
Today is Endangered Species Day, a moment to reflect on the rare and vulnerable species that rely on healthy habitats and dedicated conservation efforts. Here in the Catawba River Valley, two species in particular remind us just how important this work is: the Carolina Heelsplitter and the Rocky Shoals Spider Lily.
The Carolina Heelsplitter, one of the most endangered freshwater mussels in the Southeast, continues to face significant challenges from habitat loss and declining water quality. Likewise, the Rocky Shoals Spider Lily—famous for its breathtaking spring blooms—faces severe threats from altered river flows, sedimentation, and habitat disturbance. Both species serve as powerful indicators of the health of our waterways and the ecosystems that depend on them.
In recognition of this important day, Katawba Valley Land Trust is pleased to announce the next event in our KVLT Speaker Series. On Thursday, June 4 at 7 PM, Ericah Beason of the South Carolina Department of Natural Resources will speak at the Carole Ray Dowling Center on the USC Lancaster campus. Ericah will share her team’s ongoing work to protect and restore the endangered Carolina Heelsplitter, offering insight into the species’ ecology, the challenges it faces, and the hands‑on conservation strategies being used to support its recovery.
This weekend also marks a celebration of another threatened species: the Rocky Shoals Spider Lily. Lilyfest, held annually at Landsford Canal State Park, takes place May 16 and 17 and offers visitors a chance to witness one of the largest remaining populations of this remarkable plant in full bloom. The festival highlights both the beauty of the species and the importance of protecting the river systems it depends on.
